Wood for the fire . . . .

Our wood stove
He who cuts his own wood, warms himself twice.
That quote, which is more than likely on old proverb, has been attributed to folks as disparate as Henry David Thoreau and Henry Ford, two gentlemen who shared little but a first name. Since our household depends on wood for the heat we get during the winter months (our sole exception being an oil-filled electric space heater in the room where our birds reside), we can attest to the truth of that statement.

Though we do buy loads of wood from a couple of local sources, we always have tried to  save a bit of money by searching the forest around us for fuel for our fires. I'm not a woodsman by any stretch of the imagination, though I can handle a chain saw fairly well---enough to get the job done. I'm not about to start falling trees (I leave that to the experts), but I look for the odd "leaners"; trees that have another tree or brush holding them up so they are not on the ground and full of rot. They provide dry and mostly seasoned wood for our needs.

There is more than the financial savings involved here, however. By taking this effort, I have a more direct connection to my source of warmth than those who depend on a thermostat to regulate their comfort. I know where my heat comes from because I am part of the process. There is a sense of gratitude and awareness that I never had when I depended on an electric or gas furnace for heat. It also requires a constant vigilance to keep the fire going, adding large chunks of hard wood and shutting down the stove before going to bed so there will be coals to rev it up again in the morning, watching for sparks when the doors are open, and of course maintaining a wood supply to feed the flames.

I think of recent studies I've read where young people who have never seen a farm---except maybe on TV or at the movies (if anyone even goes to movies anymore)---think the source of food is a grocery store or the refrigerator. There is such a tragic disconnect in that perception. Food, heat, clothing, and other essentials become things manufactured in factories, rather than harvested on farms or created by crafts people. This is not just a nostalgic thing which is quickly going the way of the dodo and buffalo; it is a recipe for dysfunction and ignorance as we forget the natural world we are still a part of and dependent on.

I really love our wood stove. It is a center of our home during the darkest months of the year. And I am happy my grand daughter likes to feed and poke at the fire. She at least will have some memories of the place that warmth comes from.

Our Thanksgiving

Well, our Thanksgiving went splendidly. Our Daughter and Grand Daughter joined us, and we had a wonderful (and early) dinner with all the fix-ins.
A 16 pound bird, cage and hormone free.

My Grand Daughter is a wee bit leery of the flutes we used for the sparkling grape juice.

The groaning board.
I am quite conscious that on this day we commemorate a time when our ancestors were saved from starvation by the indigenous people who they then proceeded to wipe of the face of the Earth, and that seems a stupid thing to give thanks for. But my family's presence is a blessing, and for that I am grateful.

The baking begins

With Thanksgiving coming tomorrow, and our daughter and grand daughter visiting from Redding, the baking has begun. My wife is bustling away in the kitchen right now, but here is my earliest contribution to the feast; a loaf of honey whole wheat bread infused with a coat of butter.

I have much to be thankful for, not the least of which is my family and the love we share. I wish you the best during this day of gratitude.

Black Friday? No, thank you!

Today was the corporate media created feeding frenzy known as "Black Friday", and I spent the day with my grand daughter avoiding the consumer bullshit. I definitely avoided WalMart and Target (greedy corporate bastards), and we went on a walk this evening. She wanted to check out the nearby Ace Hardware store, where besides the two of us there were four employees and no one else. I remarked to one of the employees as he leaned on his register "Black Friday rush, huh?", which elicited a chuckle.

The insanity of our money grubbing culture and the way people are manipulated by the cheerleaders in the MSM is nowhere more evident than in this manufactured event. Take a break, folks, and remember what is really important about these holidays.

And to the bosses at WalMart and the other retailers forcing underpaid employees to leave their families at this time of year (and then who call the extra hours their employees are compelled to work "bonuses"), I say: fuck you very much. You got none of my money today, and while it may not have hurt you very much, it made me feel great.

The eclipse and the grand daughter

I have been horribly deficient in posting anything due to an extremely busy life, but I did want to get these pictures up.

Two weekends ago we went to our Grand daughter's to celebrate her 9th birthday, and while we were there the solar eclipse occurred. We bustled around trying to find a way to watch it (pinhole in cardboard, layering photo negatives), when we realized that the leaves of the trees there made hundreds of projections of the event:

This shot was taken during its peak, the so-called "ring of fire." Don't think that was what Johnny Cash was singing about . . . .

Here's the birthday girl with a bit of the eclipse on her face.

One of the things I found rather stunning was that my Grand Daughter had gotten absolutely no information about this monumental occurrence at her school. I guess that it doesn't fit the cookie cutter teaching which now passes for education in our country. I remember learning a lot about such current events when I was in school, and they were approached as opportunities to teach science or politics or whatever. It seems the increasing emphasis on testing for what is called "progress" doesn't allow such distractions.

If you're not pissed off, you're not paying attention . . . .

A cat and a laser---endless amusement

Here's a movie from the holidays: my Grand Daughter playing with her new kitty, Bender, and a laser pointer. The fun speaks for itself.

Happy Xmas . . . .

We're visiting our Grand Daughter and her Mom for Xmas. There's nothing that puts the "X" back in "Xmas" like getting milk and cookies ready for Santa:

She even put some carrots out for the reindeer, keeping all the participants covered. Of course, we tracked Santa via the NORAD site, and she had to hit the sack to avoid getting skipped by the big guy.

It's such a wonderful time for children. I wish it would never end. Happy Holidays, everyone!

The Soul of Patience

My grand daughter exhibits great patience here, waiting for me to record the moment before chowing down on Thanksgiving dinner:

And here she defers taking the first bite of grandma's homemade pumpkin pie so I can snap a shot. What a cooperative subject!

Once again, Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Chopsticks

No doubt due to the movie "Kung Fu Panda", my grand daughter has been wanting to learn to use chop sticks for a while now. On our recent visit to see her and her Mommy we went to a Chinese restaurant, and she picked up this skill very quickly. Here she demonstrates the next night on the leftovers:

And here's a short film of her showing off:

The discouraging thing about all this is that she's already better than me with them . . . .

A present you can make book on

Tom Tommorrow's web site is my browser's home page, so my grand daughter was introduced to his characters Sparky and Blinky at a very young age. When I heard he had produced a children's book starring these two, The Very Silly Mayor, I knew what at least one of her Christmas presents would be. And, as you can see, it was a good choice:

Oh, and grandpa likes it too!

From the aggravating to the sublime:

After all the political and social BS that has been buffeting us this year, there is something reassuring about a cliche-ridden tradition such as decorating the Christmas tree. And nothing warms my weary soul more than my six-year-old grand daughter.

Lots of familiar ornaments reappear.

Sometimes help from Mom is necessary.

We got new lights: LED low energy use ones. They actually look very charming.

Tinsel hanging is serious business.

My grand daughter and wife did some temporary Christmas artwork. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Travels with myself

Doesn't my car look happy? Nothing like a check up and clean up to give your auto a better attitude . . . .

I'm on the road for the next few days. I got my car to the dealer for it's regular maintainence, and I ordered new glasses due to my vision actually getting better (according to my opthomologist). Now I'm in a hotel near the big city (San Francisco) so I can go to a private lesson at the voice over school where I take classes tomorrow. Then it's a long drive into the broiling interior of the state for a visit to my step daughter and grand daughter.

I don't get out of town all that much, and it's easy to forget the vibe of larger, busier areas like the one I am in. There's a sort of tension that is pervasive, and until you acknowledge it, it can start to dominate your emotions. I don't know how I managed to live in such a setting (though in another place) for most of my life without going crazy . . . but I guess I did sort of get a bit insane/addicted for a good chunk of that time, now that I think of it.

Anyway, I'll try to make some more posts during my journey.

Here's the door to my room. And just because you know my room number don't think you're going to find me!

Ah, nothing like the bland dinginess of a cheap hotel room to make me feel right at home!

Takin' it on the road

We're getting ready to go see the kids (step daughter and grand daughter) in the HOT part of the state. It's always such a thrill to go see them, and it's amazing how quickly our grandaughter is growing. She's already 6 years old and in first grade!

Such a transition in six short years! From this:

Don't blink or you can miss something!

Place Position/Fugazi/1997-05-03 - Electric Factory
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds/The Beatles/Love*

*My step daughter asked me to put together a CD of Beatles song for her daughter, who is going to be six next month. It seems as if it is hard to find Beatles songs on line, and she got the little one a shirt that had "All You Need is Love" emblazoned on it, which prompted my grand daughter to ask "What is that?" Being unable to show her through the usual google means, she asked my help.

That's kind of sad, isn't it? All the crap that's out there, and the Fab Four are missing. Makes me feel REALLY old!

Coincidence?

As the end of a long, eight year nightmare comes tomorrow, the weather in this neck of the woods seems to be mirroring a brighter outlook.

You know the weather's good when sand coated shoes are parked outside the front door after a trip to the beach with our grand daughter.

Some impromptu garden art catching some rays.

Flowers are making a bit of an early appearance, as the temperatures edge into the 70s.

A corner of our yard, along the neighbor's fence, displays no sign of winter still being the operative season.

A trio of potential flowers, ready for the show.

On a lighter note:

Here a message from my grand daughter and me to all the negative crap out there:

Self portrait

One of the blessings and constant amazements of my life has been my grand daughter. She is so funny, bold, loving, and just plain wonderful that I am always feeling blessed to have her in my life.  She visited us over the Thanksgiving holiday, and it was a great time to share with her.

At one point she came out to the computer room by herself, and when I came out to join her she had already opened my iMac's PhotoBooth program and started taking pictures of herself. She had seen me do this once or twice, and at five years old she is a sponge for learning how to work things. The photo here is one she took on her own before I got to the scene.

Is it any wonder that she is my ice cream mint honey heart?

Out of town, not out to lunch . . . .

I've been visiting my grand daughter and step daughter for the last five days, with a couple more days to go yet. I don't get to see them often enough, so I am very focused on them during my time here. Plus my grand daughter, who is five, always wants to play on the computer with me if I have it out, so blog posting is at a low priority right now.

She and I made a visit to worship at the Church of Chuck E. Cheese here locally, and I got the pictures here posted. She is an utter joy to be with, and I am quite happy, though also very tired. It's good to be the grandpa!

Friday Random 10 plus 6

Fugazi Hard at work . . .

A random list of tunes from my 'puter's library, picked by the Party Shuffle function of iTunes (no editing allowed!):

I Need To Say Goodbye/Vast/Nude
Wheels/Cake/Pressure Chief
Going Steady/Death from Above 1979/Live Session (iTunes Exclusive) - EP
Pocoyo (theme)/Pocoyo/Hey Hey (Big Songs for Little People)
Twin Cinema/The New Pornographers/Twin Cinema
05 Love_Is_Not_Enough/Nine Inch Nails/With Teeth

I Got The Hots/Robyn Hitchcock/2004-01-09 - Maxwell's

Ballad To An Amber Lady/Pearls Before Swine/One Nation Underground
The Southern Thing/Drive-By Truckers/Southern Rock Opera
My Body Is A Cage/Arcade Fire/Neon Bible
The Gift/Seether/Karma And Effect

The Pocoyo is a kid's song I got to burn on a CD for my grand daughter (a CD which has been played so repetatively that her Mommy is threatening to use it as a frisbee). Cake is a great group, and I recommend anything they do, as I own everything they have released. Fugazi comes from my old hometown of Washington, DC (actually I'm from Adelphi, MD, but who knows where that is?), and they are still churning out the Straight Edge punk for their own label Dischord Records. And frankly, I was late picking up on The New Pornographers, but they are smokin'!

Our Grand Daughter and Her Mommy Plant Some Strawberries

Granma gives expert advice.

Line 'em up . . . .

A helping hand.

Just so . . . .

One per hole.

Patting down the dirt.

Get them all wet.

"I'm making rainbows!"

A little hand washing.

Gardening is thirsty work!
