Working with the lizard brain, Austin style

Well, the music festival I work for is coming to a close, and for the next to last night, we featured the Austin Lounge Lizards. If Bob Wills and Jimmy Martin hired Tom Leher or Frank Zappa to do lyrics, it would probably come out like the Lounge Lizards. They play some kick-ass music, and sing songs that are utterly satirical and hysterical. The crowd just loved songs like "Another Stupid Texas Song" and "Jesus Loves me (But He Can't Stand You)". They have incredible instrumental mastery, and the harmonies for these irreverent words are as good as anything you're likely to hear in bluegrass. But it's their cockeyed view of politics and personal relationships which really makes them stand out. I don't think I've laughed so hard in quite a long time. How can you not like a group that does a German hip hop song, or who covers "One-Eyed One Horn Flying Purple People Eater"?

One more night to go, and this baby gets put to bed for another year . . . .
