John Reischman and the Jaybirds

For my money, there's nothing more satisfying than bluegrass music in an intimate setting done well. Tonight we had the chance to experience just this, as we went to see John Reischman and the Jaybirds. They are some of the finest practitioners of this traditional art form, and they were at the top of their form tonight.
Yeah, I know, it was "Super Bowl Sunday", but I really couldn't care less about that part of American "culture". this was the real deal. Sublime harmonies, incredible instumentalism, and wonderful songs. Reischman is one of the more amazing mandolin players around, and he is accompanied by some rather fine musicians: Jim Nunally on guitar and vocals, Trisha Gagnon on bass and vocals, Nick Hornbuckle on banjo and Greg Spatz on fiddle. All of them were amazing, and I can't recommend them enough if you have the chance to go see them or pick up one of their CDs.

One of the most incredible things about authentic bluegrass groups is the choreography involved in sharing a single vocal mic. It's amazing that no one gets injured as they weave in and out to reach the mic, moving themselves and their instruments seemingly effortlessly.

Ahhhhh . . . . It's so wonderful to hear live music. And with Reischman and crew, it's more than an experience---it's a treat!
