A Bright and Shining New Year (At Least for a Little While)

Optimism is not a form of being brain dead, no matter what you may have heard. It is a nourishing of one's hopeful impulses in spite of the general negativity which seems to flourish in our world today. Finding hope in a despairing world is a way to rise above the darkness, and bring a little light into this existence. And it is a helluva lot more fun than pessimism, for the most part.

I am coming into this year with a sense of hope. There has been so much darkness in the world for the last few years that I want to make myself a force for positive change, however small an influence that may have. Wallowing in the problems and despair only makes the world all the more dark, which is certainly no accomplishment. I want to look for the good and uplifting in this world and in myself, and to do that I have to believe in the hope that is all around me and within me. And within you too.

The utter darkness which the Saddam execution, the Katrina and Iraq debacles, the BushCo arrogance, and so much more are examples of dark things that need some offsetting. I'm going to try my best to get to a place of hope, and try to make this New Year a new start for myself.

Take a minute today to meditate on hope, to plant a seed of goodness in the crap that may surround you. Make a difference.
