Coming up on the 4th of July, and maybe I just want to take a moment to remember the real meaning of the holiday. Don't we refer to it as "Independence Day"? (No, I don't mean that shitty alien invasion movie with Will Smith in it! BLEEECH!) It's about finding ourselves in an ocean of others, and joinig together in the common good. It's about being brave enough to be free, and free enough to be a little scared. And it's about looking to each other for what we may need, and giving what we can.
The concept of patriotism has been highjacked by the corrupt leaders who have let us down again and again, and it needs to be redefined by those who truly understand both the freedom and the responsibility inherent in the word.
