George Orwell's New Job at the White House

In an important clarification of President George W. Bush's earlier statement, a top White House official refused to unequivocally rule out the use of torture, arguing the US administration was duty-bound to protect Americans from terrorist attack.

The comment, by US national security adviser Stephen Hadley, came amid heated national debate about whether the CIA and other US intelligence agencies should be authorized to use what is being referred to as "enhanced interrogation techniques" to extract from terror suspects information that may help prevent future assaults.

This is how it works now: Bush comes out and denies the thing that the administration is accused of, and then one of his toadies comes out soon after and says the opposite, making a moral fiction of the statement.

"Enhanced interrogation techniques"
???? George Orwell is alive and well!!

They are saying they will use torture IN OUR NAME. These people don't torture because it's effective, or even really to protect us. They do it because these frustrated CEOs who have never faced any sort of real danger themselves LIKE to have such power over others. It makes them feel like REAL MEN (and I am including Ms. Rice in that.)

Our country is in real moral trouble here if this is allowed to continue. This is, I think, how the fascists in Nazi Germany got their start: not in one fell swoop, but by increments and little changes. Our country was founded on principles. These people have only the principles of expediency and power.

And if we allow them to do this, we deserve whatever comes after . . . and it won't be good.
